Guest lab lecturing on fish fossils with D.Turner and Dr.Taylor
Rick Taylor's class is a great place to enrich your knowledge about fish. I came up with the idea to present beautiful and fascinating fish fossil specimens from the Beaty Biodiversity Museum to Rick's students from my "Taxonomy and Evolution of Fish" class. While labeling fossil drawers, I found a remarkably well preserved Teleost Fish (Dapedoglossus testis) from the Eocene from Wyoming (see left picture). I could not resist the temptation to show it to Rick's fish class.
Wyoming is part of the Green River Formation. It is particular in that it has two layers of very fine lime mud that helped to preserve well-defined fish fossils. Wyoming is thus known to be an Eocene Lagerstätte, a unique place where fossilization conditions are met. David Turner and I had a great time sharing our knowledge of fish!
A special thanks to Rick and David!
